Prophecy fulfilled by Israel

Prophecy Fulfilled by Israel – Summary

About the times of the End, a body of men will be raised up who will turn their attention to the prophecies, and insist upon their literal interpretation, in the midst of much clamor and opposition.
[Sir Isaac Newton, 1642 – 1747]

Some claim that modern Israel a special nation amongst the nations of the world. And they claim that Israel will have an increasing role in the world as we near the end of this age. Prophecy fulfilled by Israel is a good test of these claims, and we need look no further back than the 20th century. During this time there are at least FIVE prophecies about Israel that have clearly been fulfilled: 1) the return of Jerusalem to the Jews, 2) the return of millions of Jews to their promised land, 3) the rebirth of the Jewish nation, 4) the protection of Israel against aggressors, and 5) the blessing of the land of Israel.

Here are Five Recent Examples of Prophecy Fulfilled by Israel

1. Prophecy Fulfilled: Jerusalem and the Times of the Gentiles

Historically, Jerusalem was under Jewish rule until the invasion of Judah and Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar around 600 BC, link. Although some Jews returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile, Jerusalem was always under some form of Gentile rule until the 20th century. Then, in 1917, things started to change when General Allenby liberated Jerusalem from Turkish rule. Jerusalem then came under the 1922 League of Nations (British) Mandate for Palestine – a mandate to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Scroll on 50 years and we see Jerusalem being fully liberated from Gentile rule after the 1967 6-Day War. At this point, all of Jerusalem came under Jewish rule for the first time in some 2,500 years and Jesus’ prophecy was fulfilled:

Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled
(Lk 21.24)

2. Prophecy Fulfilled: the In-gathering of Jews from the Nations

In just 100 years the Jewish population of Israel has risen an amazing 7,700 percent (see Aliyah). Why this mass immigration to Israel? It is a fulfillment of prophecies which say that God will take His people from all the nations and bring them back into their own land (as promised to Abraham).

Behold, I will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone … and bring them into their own land (Ezekiel 37.21)

Jews are coming from all over the world, from wherever they have been scattered amongst the nations. The first wave of immigration started in 1882 and particularly involved Jews from Russia and Romania. By 2008 the number of Jews living in Israel was more than any other country since the year 70 AD. Why this return? This prophecy fulfilled by Israel is an end-time sign to the nations that God is about to intervene in world affairs:

He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; He will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four corners of the earth (Isaiah 11:12)

3. Prophecy Fulfilled: Israel – A Nation Born in a Day

prophecy fulfilled by Israel

Many prophecies foresaw the end-time gathering of the nation Israel from out of the Gentile nations – they were to come from the east and the west, the north and the south. This has happened over the last 100 years: in 1915 there were just 83,000 Jews in Palestine but this increased to over 6.2 million Jews in 2015, link, corresponding to an amazing 7400% increase! In comparison, over the same period the UK population increased just 55%. Equally amazing is the fact that the nation Israel was “born in a day” when the State of Israel was declared on 14 May 1948. This was fulfilment of prophecy:

Who has ever seen anything as strange as this? Who ever heard of such a thing? Has a nation ever been born in a single day? (Isa 66.8, NLT)

4. Prophecy Fulfilled: Israel is the Apple of God’s Eye

In 1967 the armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon (and later Iraq) attacked Israel with the goal “to wipe Israel off the map”. Israel defeated the attack in just 6 days even though the Arab armies had huge superiority in armour, aircraft and troops. After the war Israel held the Sinai, the Golan Heights, Gaza, the West Bank and all of Jerusalem. In fact, the area controlled by Israel after this war was the same area allotted to Israel for Jewish settlement under the 1922 Palestine Mandate!

In 1973 Egypt and Syria launched a coordinated attack on Israel in an attempt to win back territory lost in the 6-Day War. Iraqi forces soon joined the war, and Syria received support from Jordan. The Arab armies used up-to-date Soviet weaponry. The war was launched on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar when Israel is at rest and prayer, link. This took Israeli Defense Forces by surprise and Israeli causalities were heavy. Nevertheless, after just 20 days Egypt and Syria suffered military defeat.

In 2016 Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) said their new Arrow 3 anti-ballistic missile is capable of intercepting weapons bearing chemical, biological or nuclear warheads while they are still close to their launch pads. In other words, if a missile is launched from Iran it will fall on Iran!

These wartime victories against all odds, and superior anti-missile technologies are seen as fulfilled prophecy:

Whoever assails you will fall because of you … no weapon that is formed against you will prosper
(Isa 54.15,17)
I will be a wall of fire around her … he who touches you, touches the apple of (the Lord’s) eye
(Zech 2.5,8)

Did God Protect Israel against ISIS?

Early December 2016: Amidst increasing ISIS activity on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, Israeli soldiers stationed there reported that a literal pillar of cloud descended on the border. Reports say the strange storm (dust and rain) stopped on the border of Syria and was ‘unable’ to enter Israel’s Golan Heights area. It seems the storm cloud put a barrier between Israel and ISIS. Many believe God intervened on behalf of Israel to prevent ISIS from entering Israel, link, link.

5. Prophecy Fulfilled: Blessings of City and Land

Today, Israel’s industries include diamond processing, textiles, food processing, mining, agriculture and forestry. Despite the fact that more than half of Israel’s land is desert, Israel still manages to produce 95% of its own food requirements, link. Israel is also a major exporter of dates, avocados, olive oil, pomegranates and almonds, and is a world-leader in agricultural technologies, such as drip irrigation.

Israel’s scientific and technological advances are astounding: her industry now boasts many thousands of hi-tech companies in a wide range of fields such as computer science, electronics, genetics, optics, biotechnology, medical electronics, solar energy and electric cars. The majority of these companies are from startups. All major hi-tech companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Intel and Samsung now have R&D centres in Israel. In particular, cyber-security is big business there, link, involving some 200 Israeli companies and accounting for US$3 billion worth of anti-hacking exports in 2013.

The country has been described as an “economic miracle” since it has consistently had more companies listed on NASDAQ than all of Europe combined, and consistently scores as one of the top countries for patents per capita, see Venture Capital. According to Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, Israel’s export of ‘goods’ (excluding services) has risen consistently over several decades, from $6 billion in 1980, to $31 billion in 2000 to over $63 billion in 2014.

Clearly, Israel’s cities and land are prospering. Why? Is it simply God’s end-time plan for Israel? Or is it a blessing from God because a majority of the Jews in Israel honour God by observing “halakhah” (the “Jewish Law”) e.g. by observing God’s feasts, keeping Shabbat, and praying once or twice a day? Or is it both? We are seeing the following prophecies being fulfilled:

Israel shall blossom and bud and fill the face of the world with fruit (Isa 27.6)
If you observe carefully all His commandments … (then) blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country (Deut 28.1,3)

Prophecies about Israel – Abraham to the Millennium

Here are 54 Bible prophecies about Israel, many of which have been fulfilled.

prophecy fulfilled by Israel

Tiny Israel punches above her weight. Geographically she is just the size of Wales and she has less than ten million people, but she still stands unique amongst the nations. Why? The answer is that her existence (past, present and future) is mapped out in the scriptures. No other nation has such a well-defined timeline. Nations come and nations go, but according to the Bible, Israel will never disappear! Today we are seeing prophecy fulfilled by Israel.

The following slides give 54 key Bible prophecies relating to the people and the land of Israel. They give a clear timeline of Israel – past, present and future. They clearly predict the present regeneration of the land itself, the recent discovery of natural resources, and the current unprecedented immigration (aliyah) to Israel. They also describe the future world government and how the nations will one day honour Israel. And prophecy describes a future harmony between Jew and non-Jews; they live at peace alongside each other in a Millennial age. That’s better than any “two-state” solution!

God’s People: Israel

God promised Abraham and his descendants (the people of Israel) all the land of Canaan (modern Israel) as an everlasting possession. He promised Abraham that he would become a great nation, and that this nation would be God’s own people, a unique people on the face of the earth. They are God’s chosen servant to be a witness to Himself and to make a name for Himself. Today, after 2,500 years of exile through disobedience, Israel is once more on the world stage as millions of Jews return to their own land. Today there is a State of Israel and she is becoming the focus of world attention as we approach the end of the age. God is leading them, just as a Father leads his little child.

Aliyah: the Ingathering of Israel

For a time rebellious Israel was forsaken by God and they were scattered (like dry bones) amongst the nations. But Ezekiel the prophet saw a valley of dry bones that became alive as God brought the people back to their own land. In these last days God has reached out to His people and wants to blot out their sin and unite them with Himself. So He is calling His people out from the nations, back into their own land, the land of Canaan. Jews call this ingathering or mass immigration back to their own land ‘aliyah’ or ‘ascent’. It has been underway now for over 100 years, drawing in some 8 million people. The Gentile nations cannot help but see an amazing thing: a nation born almost overnight. It is a very clear sign to the nations that the God of Israel is working in the world!

The Refining of Israel

Israel was scattered throughout the nations because she rebelled against her Creator. The prophet Ezekiel says she was like a captive behind bars, experiencing great suffering. But even when Israel returns to her own land, the vast majority of the Jews will still reject Yeshua, their true Messiah. So God brings them through a time of severe trial to refine them, like the refining of silver and the testing of gold. It is so severe that only one third survive. But this remnant at last sees Yeshua as their Messiah, and they mourn for their rejection of Him and how they pierced Him on the cross. God then pours out His Spirit upon this remnant, cleanses them, and writes His law on their hearts. From this time onwards, Israel is reunited with her God.

God’s Protection & Blessing of Israel

The refined remnant of Israel receive God’s protection and blessing. He protects them from their enemies and humbles those who have afflicted Israel. At the final assault on Israel, God causes great geological changes as the Mount of Olives splits in two (to provide protection for Israel). Israel then sees great blessings in both land and sea (possibly abundant gas and oil). Her well-watered hills produce abundant crops to fill the world with fruit and the formerly desolate land becomes like the garden of Eden. At last the nations acknowledge that Israel is God’s true witness of Himself and that His glory rests on the people of Israel.

Millennial Israel

Millennial Israel will live in peace, with the land divided equally amongst the tribes of Israel. The people will grow vineyards and build houses, and any foreigner (Gentile) will be treated equally as though they were God’s own people. Part of the land near Jerusalem will be set aside for Christ’s sanctuary, the seat of His Kingdom on earth. It will be a beautiful, glorious place. From there Christ will be King over all the earth and will the rule the nations with a rod of iron. Each year the nations will go up to Jerusalem to worship Him and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.

Seasonal and Unique Astronomical Events

The Bible attaches great significance to astronomical observations, all the way from the days of Genesis and running right through to the end of the age. For example, the sun and moon were created ‘for signs and seasons’ (Gen 1.14) and so the Jewish calendar is essentially a lunar calendar with twelve lunar months, each month starting on the new moon.

Celestial events occur either on a regular basis, as in seasonal signs, or as unique events. Either way, God’s timing of these signs is precise – there are appointed times and sometimes they are associated with Israel’s appointed feasts (Num 9.2, Lev 23.2).

Unique events have occurred in history (see later) and will occur with increasing importance toward the end of this age. The latter are God’s ‘bill-board’ for the world and Jesus told man to watch for unique celestial events at the end of the age. Either way, whether regular or unique, God’s timing of these celestial events is precise.

Blood Moons

In 2014-2015 a sequence of four total lunar eclipses occurred (seen as four ‘blood moons’). This is a pretty rare event in itself, but when each blood moon occurred virtually precisely on a Jewish feast date (Pesach or Sukkot) many saw it of particular significance to Israel. Heavenly signs like this are also given to warn mankind of God’s impending intervention in the world, and the moon will again ‘turn to blood’ at the end of this age (Joel 2.31)(Rev 6.12,13).

Asteroid Impacts

An astronomical event that catches the news headlines today is the possibility of an asteroid strike on earth. NASA defines a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) as having the potential to make close approaches to the Earth and a size large enough to cause significant damage in the event of impact. The 1908 Tunguska asteroid (which nearly impacted) released energy equivalent to about 185 Hiroshima bombs. So it was a timely warning.

In 2016 there were over 1,700 known PHAs and, clearly, it only needs one to hit! Do we treat this as just another scare story, or does it have some deeper significance? Put another way, will it actually happen in the foreseeable future? Yes – Bible prophecy strongly suggests that it will! Revelation 8.8,9 refers to “something like a great mountain burning with fire was throne into the sea … a third of the ships were destroyed”. This could be a biblical description of a future major asteroid impact.

When referring to the end of this present age, Jesus said:

The stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken (Mk 13.25)

It’s Happened Before

The Bible records a day when the normal cycle of the sun seemed to have been interrupted – the sun seemingly back-tracked. As a sign to King Hezekiah that he would live another 15 years (which he did). God said:

I will make the shadow cast by the sun go back the ten steps it has gone down on the stairway of Ahaz. So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had gone down (Isa 38.8)

It is claimed that this was no ordinary astronomical phenomenon in that it cannot be explained by any known astronomical law. So despite attempts to explain it by known laws, link, it remains unexplained and is attributed to a miracle of God.

A Barren Land: In 1869 Mark Twain described Palestine (Israel) as “a desolate country given over wholly to weeds”. That was not surprising since the Negev Desert (Israel’s southern region) accounts for over half of Israel’s total land mass. But things began to change early last century. In 1909 Israel’s first kibbutz was founded by young Jewish immigrants and kibbutzim played a key role in Israel’s agricultural development. New immigrants also embarked upon an extensive program of afforestation, and since 1900 almost 250 million sub-tropical trees have been planted in all regions of Israel.

Hi-Tech Agriculture: Today, using hi-tech agriculture such as drip and micro-irrigation, link, the desert literally blooms with fruit, as prophesied in the Bible. Even those who reject the words of the Bible have to admit that the land of Israel has gone through an agricultural miracle. Israel’s agriculture is now a highly developed industry although its importance in Israel’s overall economy is relatively small. For instance, in 1979 it accounted for about 6% of GDP shrinking to just 2.5% of GDP in 2006, and only some 3% of the population is employed in actual agricultural production. But despite a small workforce, and despite the fact that more than half of Israel’s land is desert, Israel still manages to produce 95% of its own food requirements. That is some achievement!

New Forest’s: Israel is one of only two countries in the world that began the 21st century with more trees than it had at the beginning of the 20th century: in 1948 forests covered only 2% of Israel’s territory, but by 2014 trees covered 8.5% of the land. Israel has also planted ceders, the Aleppo pine (Jerusalem pine), the common oak, the stone pine and cypress trees, link. It is interesting to note that, as Israel is restored, Bible prophecy says that these precise trees will be planted!

Fruit and Vegetables: In 2007, fruit and vegetables amounted to nearly 50% of Israel’s total agricultural output. Israel’s fruit production includes oranges, grape fruits, lemons, apples, apricots, grapes peaches, mangoes, plums and pears. Israel’s greenhouse production of tomatoes, peppers, herbs, melons adheres to the highest international standards.

Meat Production: The growth rate of Israel’s beef and veal production increased rapidly in the mid 1980’s. In 1998 about two-thirds of Israeli beef consumption was still imported, but today nearly half of the country’s fresh beef supply is from local producers. Israel’s meat production amounts to about 40% of Israel’s total agricultural output, of which 17% is poultry. One more interesting fact: Israel’s cows produce the highest amounts of milk per animal in the world! Recall that Israel was called out of Egypt “to a land flowing with milk and honey” (Exod 3.8).

These relatively recent blessings of the land were foretold in prophecy:

Even the wilderness and desert will rejoice in those days; the desert will blossom with flowers (Isa 35.1)
Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit (Isa 27.6)
The trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase (Ezek 34.27)

Science and the Bible

Pollution – Stars – Fried Earth – Blood Moons – Asteroids – Sea Springs – Earthquakes

The Bible is clearly not a scientific textbook. But when it does mention scientific concepts, these are often confirmed by scientific discovery. For example the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) confirms some fundamental scientific statements in the Bible. When the Bible is confirmed by respected secular authorities like NASA we are more inclined to take the Bible seriously. Maybe it’s not myth or legend as some suggest. Maybe the Bible speaks truth?

If the Bible speaks truth, we should also take note of what it says about Israel. The concept of Israel is found from Genesis to Revelation and many prophecies about Israel are coming true today, link. But for now let’s just look at a few examples where science and the Bible agree.

NASA

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA, is the United States government agency that is responsible for the civilian space program as well as for aeronautics and aerospace research. Amazingly, much of what NASA discovers simply confirms biblical statements given thousands of years ago. In fact, NASA itself acknowledges that man is humbled by the vast cosmos:

While the tremendous technical and scientific accomplishments of NASA demonstrate vividly that humans can achieve previously inconceivable feats, we also are humbled by the realization that Earth is just a tiny “blue marble” in the cosmos. [NASA history]

Consider a few of NASA’s scientific discoveries and predictions. You will find that science and the Bible agree remarkably well!

Science and the Bible: Pollution

According to Isaiah chapter 24, pollution will be a serious problem at the end of this age:

The earth is polluted by its inhabitants, because they have transgressed laws, violated statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant (Isa 24.5 AMP)

science and the Bible

Atmospheric Pollution

The image shows heavy Carbon Monoxide (CO) pollution over China as monitored by NASA’s Terra spacecraft. Red denotes 220 parts per billion (0.22 ppm) and blue denotes 50 parts per billion. Exposure to just 100 ppm of CO can lead to headaches and high concentrations can be fatal, link.

Carbon monoxide is a byproduct from the burning of fossil fuels, and this particular image suggests the pollution is arising from industry and vehicles. The image also shows that pollution is generally much higher in the Northern Hemisphere due to greater human population and industrial activity, although it can also be high in the Southern Hemisphere due to forest fires.

Ocean Pollution

Radioactive: Radioactive water from the Japanese Fukushima plant (destroyed March 2011) is pouring into the Pacific Ocean. In 2013 some 300 tons of contaminated water (an Olympic-sized swimming pool) was seeping into the ocean EVERY DAY, link. In 2016 an “underground ice-wall” was built to seal the leak, but seepage still occurs, link. Some estimate the seepage after installing the ice wall and other measures was reduced to 110 tons, link.

In 2015/16 reports came in that radioactive isotope cesium 134 was measured in low levels off the west of the United States and Canada link, link, link. This must be from Fukushima since its half-life is just 2 years. Traces of cesium 134 (and cesium 137, some of which originated from nuclear tests) were too low to threaten human health – about 1000 times below regulatory food limits, link.

Nevertheless, radiation could build up in larger Pacific fish at the top of the food chain, and radioactive contamination of salmon along the west coast has been reported, link. In Japan there is a serious storage problem with the threat of ocean dumping, and there is no end in site for clearing Fukushima, MRonline.

The screen shot (sometimes used to suggest Fukushima ocean pollution) was actually created by NOAA’s Center for Tsunami Research to show maximum wave heights of the tsunami generated by the 2011 magnitude 9.0 earthquake, link. Nevertheless, you may find the associated video informative: see Fukushima pollution.

Plastic: In contrast to the Fukushima pollution, world-wide plastic pollution is well publicized. Scientists claim that around 8 million tons of plastic bottles, bags, toys and other plastic rubbish ends up in the world’s oceans each year. It affects over 600 different species of sea life with at least 1 million seabirds dying each year.

NASA has created a visualization (time-lapse video) of where this pollution concentrates. The study is based on floating scientific buoys that NOAA has been distributing in the oceans for the last 35 years. The NASA modelling shows the location of five “garbage patches” in the world’s oceans – two in the northern hemisphere and three in the southern hemisphere.

Science and the Bible: Star Constellations

Did you know that the Bible refers to specific star clusters? When the man Job questioned God, he got a sharp rebuke. God asked him:

Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the belt of Orion? (Job 38.31)

Science and the Bible

The Pleiades star cluster.
Image: NASA-STSci. Enlarge

Here, ‘bind’ is from the Hebrew ‘qashar’ meaning ‘confine’ or ‘compact’, and ‘Pleiades’ is from the Hebrew ‘kiymah’, meaning ‘a cluster’ or ‘seven stars’. So the verse could read: “Can you confine the cluster of seven stars?” Modern astronomy sheds some light on the real meaning of this biblical statement.

Consider: these brilliant stars subtend about 2° to the eye (four times the diameter of the full moon). Normal adults see six or seven stars whilst those with excellent vision see about ten, link. But NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope reveals that Pleiades is an ‘open’ i.e. not tight cluster spanning a few light years across and containing several thousand stars, link! It is much more than a small cluster of seven stars. In fact, in modern astronomy, a ‘star cluster’ usually infers thousands or even millions of stars. So in Job 38.31, is God really saying to Job, “there are really many stars in this cluster of ‘seven’, so can you really confine them to just seven“? Such an accurate scientific description in what is probably the earliest book of the Bible (c1440 BC) is intriguing!

Does the term ‘loose the belt of Orion’ have similar embedded scientific truth? Probably. The Orion Nebula Cluster has long been known as peculiar. Its stars move at a rapid speed, as if the whole cluster were flying apart, link. In particular, it is claimed that the three stars in Orion’s belt are each moving in opposite directions from each other, link. In fact, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has revealed that Orion is like a cosmic nursery, with infant stars wrapped in blankets of warm gas and dust that will one day develop into planets that orbit around the stars, link. So the term ‘loose’ (Heb ‘pathach’, meaning ‘break forth’ or ‘let go free’) appears to reflect this recent scientific discovery of a ‘cosmic birth’, link.

Science and the Bible: A Fried Earth

Bible prophecy says that one day:

the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up (2 Pet 3.10)

According to NASA the inner planets of our solar system are in danger. The trouble starts in the distant future when the sun’s core runs out of hydrogen fuel for nuclear fusion. To keep the fires burning, the sun will begin to fuse hydrogen outside the core, in a layer closer to the stellar surface. This will turn the sun into a red giant, at least 200 times wider than it is today. Mercury, Venus, Earth and possibly even Mars could be engulfed.

In 2012 a team of astronomers caught a star in the act of devouring one of its planets. They claimed a red giant appeared to have the fumes of a scorched planet in its atmosphere – something consistent with a rocky world, recently destroyed.

Science and the Bible: Time Stops Still

The following abridged story is widely circulated:

“The space program requires a knowledge of the future position of sun, moon and planets. But when NASA ran their program backwards in time they found that there is a day missing in space in elapsed time. The Old Testament came to their rescue since it records two very unusual historical events: So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven … and did not go down for about a whole day (Jos 10.13) and the LORD brought the shadow back ten degrees (2 Kings 20.11). Adding the total lost time amounted to exactly one day!”

Sadly, this story is not supported by NASA, link. On the other hand, the Bible certainly refers to observable astronomical events, as discussed below.

Science and the Bible: Blood Moons

Total Lunar Eclipse Image: NASA Ames Research Center/Brian Day

Total Lunar Eclipse
Image: NASA Ames Research Center/Brian Day

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth casts a shadow that blocks sunlight that normally reflects off of the moon. A total lunar eclipse can only happen when the sun, Earth and moon are perfectly aligned such that the moon enters the earth’s umbra. A total lunar eclipse can last for hours as the moon passes slowly through the umbra. During this time the moon will often look reddish due to red and orange light being scattered by the atmosphere (as in sunsets) and illuminating the moon. The moon’s appearance changes from pale-white to pumpkin orange to blood red.

When four consecutive lunar eclipses are all total eclipses (a rare event), the group is known as a tetrad. According to NASA, during the 21st century there will be 85 total lunar eclipses and also 8 tetrads occurring in 2003/4, 2014/15, 2032/33, 2043/44, 2050/51, 2061/62, 2072/73, and 2090/91. Past tetrads have been of great significance to Israel, and the Bible says that something like a blood moon will occur at the end of the age as a warning sign to the nations:

The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon into blood before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD (Joel 2.31)

Science and the Bible: Asteroid Impact?

Bible prophecy appears to describe an asteroid plunging into one of earth’s oceans:

And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea … and a third of the ships were destroyed (Rev 8.8,9)

science and the Bible

Asteroid impact (Rev 8.8,9)

Asteroid impact is certainly a reality. A Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) has the potential to make close approaches to the earth and a size large enough to cause significant damage in the event of impact. According to NASA there were 1,503 known PHAs by September 2014 and this had increased to 1,835 by September 2017. The total number of discovered Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) increased from virtually nil in 1990 to 20,000 by July 2019. Clearly, there are many more we do not know about, and it only needs one to hit!

On 15 February 2013, an asteroid some 45m in diameter passed the earth at a distance of just 27,700km. This is nearer than a geostationary satellite! On 11 March 2014, asteroid CU13, some 190m wide, passed earth at a distance of 3 million km. A potentially catastrophic asteroid some 410m wide link has a slim chance that it will impact Earth in 2032, creating a blast 50 times greater than the biggest nuclear bomb.

Science and the Bible: A Wobbly Earth (axis change)

axis change

Earth wobbles on its spin axis. Image: Wizaurad. Enlarge

I will shake the heavens, and the earth will move out of her place … The earth is shaken exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall totter like a hut (Isa 13:13, 24:19,20)

Here the Hebrew term for ‘earth’ is ‘erets’ (Strongs 776) meaning ‘the earth at large’ (as opposed to ‘soil’). The same Hebrew word is used in Genesis 1 verse 1 to refer to the whole earth. The context of this scripture is God’s end-time judgment upon an arrogant, rebellious, godless world.

The Bible’s brief view here of end-time astronomical events aligns with scientific analysis. It is well-known that earth’s rotational axis is tilted at almost 23.5 degrees with respect to the perpendicular to the ecliptic plane (the plane of earth’s orbit around the sun). This gives us the seasons. What is less well known is that earth’s axis ‘wobbles’ on a short-term (annual) basis!

Axis Wobble is Changing

Earth’s spin axis has annual ‘wobbles’ (‘reels to and fro’) as indicated in the diagram. Typically, axial tilt oscillates (wobbles) between 22.1 and 24.5 degrees due to the gravitational force from the Sun, the Moon, and other planets, link. Others put the oscillation between 21.5 and 25.5 degrees, see graphs and videos. In fact, the earth’s actual tilt is easily observed, link, link and has been measured accurately for hundreds of years.

NASA suggests that climate change is now changing how Earth wobbles, link. One theory is that melting ice sheets — as in Greenland — are changing the distribution of weight on the Earth. The melting Antarctic ice is seen as a particular problem, link. But ice melt alone may not be sufficient and the deficit of water in Eurasia (the Indian subcontinent and the Caspian Sea area) may provide the bulk of the answer, link:

This is the first time we have solid evidence that changes in land water distribution on a global scale also shift which direction the axis moves to. [Surendra Adhikari, NASA’s JPL]

Is Axial Tilt Increasing?

The tilt wobble being considered here is short-term (not thousands of years) and is related to climate change. Consider a 23.5 degree tilt and a point on the tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees north) in the northern hemisphere. At the summer solstice (June 21) the sun would be directly overhead at (astronomical) noon, and seen from north of the tropic it should always be in the southern sky, link, link. But if the tilt increased, the sun would be observed directly overhead north of the tropic! In other words, if the tilt went to 30 degrees then the tropic of Cancer would effectively be at 30 degrees north, link. To quote recent interviews with the Canadian Inuits, link:

The sun is now about 2000 miles too far north in the summer, shining in our northern windows … stars look different … no longer in their proper positions

This Inuit video highlights what the Inuits are observing (download may take several minutes). Others support the axis shift theory, claiming that, for the US and Canada “the sun is now further north in the summer sky … the stars which should be in the eastern sky appear to be in the northern sky”, link. These observations could be seen as aligning with Isaiah’s prophecy: “the earth will move out of her place”.

NASA disputes claims of axial tilt change. Atmospheric scientists say Inuit observations are due to atmospheric refraction caused by air density changes, link. Its rather like light when it is refracted in water. So NASA says the earth tilt of about 23.5 degrees has not changed. On the other hand, NASA does acknowledge strange weather events, as in “hurricane blizzards”, and “historic blizzards”.

Increased axial tilt would indeed give a more extreme climate – hotter summers and colder winters. Whatever the cause, such extremes are now observed worldwide! As mentioned, the Bible says a very hot and dry earth at the end of the age is implied in Isaiah 24 verses 4-6.

Since a respected organization like NASA confirms scientific statements in the Bible
isn’t it logical to accept Biblical statements on Israel as also true?

More Amazing Facts

Total Solar Eclipse

Elementary science shows that this occurs because both sun and moon subtend the same angle to the eye (they look the same size in the sky). But since the sun’s diameter is about 400 times that of the moon, this is only possible because the sun is about 400 times further away from the earth than the moon. Scientists call this as “a celestial coincidence” whilst others say it is “a beautiful coincidence”, link. NASA points out that this “coincidence” is the only time astronomers can analyse the Sun’s atmosphere or corona, link. How lucky!

Or is it ‘luck’? The Bible says this celestial geometry is not coincidence or luck – it is designed. There is intelligence behind it:

In the beginning … God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night (Genesis 1)

When conversing with Job, God made the point that the celestial geometry is not by chance:

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me … who set its measurements … who stretched the line on it? (Job 38.4-5)

Springs in the Sea

God also asked Job:

Have you entered and explored the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep? (Job 38.16 amplified)

This text implies that water was (and is) springing up from the seabed – from the deep ocean floor.

Science and the Bible

Hydrothermal vent or ‘Black Smoker’
Image NOAA, Public Domain

In 1977 scientists discovered precisely that, although the springs were not cool fresh water springs, link. These deep water springs, sometimes as deep as 3,000 m, tend to form along the mid-ocean ridges near volcanically active areas. Here, water escaping from below the earth’s crust comes through the ocean floor at temperatures as high as 464 °C. These hydrothermal vents are rich in dark dissolved minerals and sulfur and emerge from the ocean floor in ‘funnels’, giving rise to the term ‘black smokers’. But these areas are not void of life; they exhibit abundant and unusual sea life like giant tube worms, huge clams, and mussels, link.

Noah’s Flood? At a depth of 3,000 meters the hydrostatic pressure is more than 300 atmospheres. At this point seawater becomes super-critical at a temperature of 407°C, possessing physical properties between those of a gas and those of a liquid. So the ocean floor can give super-critical water – the explosive form of water. Was this part of the ‘fountains of the deep’ associated with Noah’s flood (Gen 7.11)?

Jerusalem’s Big Quake

This age is rapidly coming to a close and the next age on earth (the Millennium) will be born with a huge earthquake in the Jerusalem area:

In that day His (Christ’s) feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives, which lies before Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in half from the east to the west by a very large valley, and half of the mountain will move toward the north and half of it toward the south (Zech 14.4)

Mount Olives geological fault. Courtesy Philologos.org

It is well known in Earth Sciences that the Jordan/Dead Sea Valley is not a true tectonic rift but is part of a ‘continental transform’, link. It is a tectonic plate boundary that laterally offsets the Arabian tectonic plate against the African tectonic plate, link. Running SW-NE across this transform or slip-fault are geologic folds. These are formed when two tectonic plates collide. The significant point here is that, as the map shows, geologic folds run SW-NE close to Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives. Given these geological faults, the World Health Organization (WHO) places the Jerusalem area at “high risk”.

The quake will generate “a very large valley … reaching to Azal” (Zech 14.4,5). The location of Azal is debated, but there is good evidence to suggest that it was a town situated near the mouth of the Azal River/Valley. This is the far southern point of the Mount of Olives, link.

Noah’s Ark

The Bible is rather brief on the design of Noah’s Ark:

The length of the Ark shall be 300 cubits, its width 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits … You shall make it with lower, second and third decks (Gen 6.15,16)

Nevertheless, it turns out that this is sufficient to perform serious analysis of the Ark’s stability using modern ship design techniques. Naval studies concluded that the Ark was extremely stable and could have navigated sea conditions with waves higher than 30 metres, link, link.

Circumcision

God instructed Abraham to circumcise a male child when he is 8 days old (Gen 17.12). Why day eight? Medical science has shown that on the eighth day the amount of blood clotting factor prothrombin present in the body is more than 100% above normal, and this is normally the only day in the male’s life when this is the case, link. Day eight is the optimal day for minimizing hemorrhaging during circumcision!

Our Thoughts and Words affect our Health

Research shows that a positive mental attitude can benefit our health. Scientists from Harvard School of Public Health, the University of Pittsburgh and Boston University linked an optimistic outlook with lower risk of heart disease in older men and less thickening of the carotid artery walls in women, link. An American study of 2,564 men and women who were 65 and older also found that optimism is good for blood pressure. Overall, “optimism appears to protect the heart and circulation”. So optimistic people live longer and, conversely, pessimism is linked to negative affects on health, link. Also, studies show that speaking negative words e.g the word “No” can have negative effects on our health. Fear-provoking words – like poverty, illness, and death also stimulate the brain in negative ways, link, link.

This scientific research simply echoes advice given in the Bible:

A calm and peaceful and tranquil heart is life and health to the body, but passion and envy are like rottenness to the bones (Prov 14.30)
A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed (Prov 15.13)
The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and a good report makes the bones healthy (Prov 15.30)
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones (Prov 17.22)

And when it comes to what we say:

Who is the man who loves length of days that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit (Ps 34.12-13)
Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up (Prov 12.25)
Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones (Prov 16.24)
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits (Prov 18.21)

Where do we get this joyful heart? How do we control our tongue? The Bible says it all comes from seeking God and His wisdom:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom … for by me [wisdom from God] your days will be multiplied and years of life will be added to you (Prov 9.10-11 amplified)
Bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things … godliness with contentment [that contentment which comes from a sense of inner confidence based on the sufficiency of God] is great gain (1 Tim 4.8, 6.6 amplified)

End-time Lawlessness

Lawlessness: Many feel that violence and terrorism has increased in modern times. In fact, official statistics confirm that acts of terrorism have increased markedly in recent decades. Worldwide, the total number of people injured through terror-related attacks has increased from around 200 per year in 1970 to around 40,000 per year in 2016 (a 20,000 percent increase), link.

Examples of Lawlessness in France

  • January 2015: three days of attacks by gunmen in Paris left 17 people dead, starting with an attack on the office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and ending in two sieges
  • November 2015: multiple attacks on Paris by seven gunmen and suicide bombers killed 130 people and injured more than 350 in the deadliest terror attack in French history
  • June 2016: a man claiming allegiance to so-called Islamic State killed two police officials in Magnanville, near Paris
  • July 2016: a 19 tonne cargo truck was deliberately driven into crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day, Nice, France, resulting in 86 people dead and 458 injured

Terrorism: The Bastille-Day-massacre July 2016

Random Doomsday Events, or Prophecy Coming True?

The truth is that we are seeing Bible prophecy being fulfilled before our eyes. The Bible refers to modern-day terrorism as ‘signs of the times’ and says in the book of Matthew that they will accelerate as the end of the age draws near. Intensifying terrorist attacks point to an acceleration towards the end of this sick world and the ushering in of a new age on this earth (the so-called Millennium).

In the 24th book of the Gospel of Matthew, starting from verse 12, Jesus actually predicts increased lawlessness:

Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come

In the gospel of John chapter 16, starting at verse 2, Jesus also says:

An hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me

And in the 59th chapter of the book of Isaiah, starting at verse 6, the prophet says:

Their deeds are evil deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands. Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways. The way of peace they do not know

Is there Hope for the Future?

Knowledge of what is happening in the world makes us fear for our future and that of our families and friends. In these dark times in which we live, is there reason to hope? Yes! In contrast to our present-day rise of terrorism, the prophet Isaiah wrote of a beautiful future in the 60th chapter of his book, verse 18:

Violence will not be heard again in your land, nor devastation or destruction within your borders

This prophecy concerns the people of Israel and the land covenanted to them through Abraham. But it also concerns the nations who will one day walk in the ways of the one true God, the God of Israel. World-wide lawlessness will cease. As the prophet Isaiah foresees in chapter 11 verse 9:

They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain. For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea
